Summary

In this talk I shall briefly describe my role as a Research Software Engineer. This means I'm the guy who turns the ideas of the scientific computational modellers into efficient, portable, maintainable code, and in particular how I help the modellers exploit very large "supercomputers". I'll talk briefly about the techniques used, and then give a whistle stop tour of the projects I am involved, which cover most things from an atomic level understanding of quite why X-rays are bad for us, through practical problems in car-design, to modelling fusion power in the largest Tokamak project to date.
