I was born in a small town close to Como, in Northern Italy. I studied biomedical engineering at the Politecnico di Milano (Milan Technical University), where I graduated with full marks in 2004. I then moved to the University of Southampton to carry out research in molecular modelling under the supervision of Prof Jon Essex. In 2009 I was awarded a personal postdoctoral fellowship by the UK engineering and physical sciences research council (EPSRC).
