BSc Geography, University of Southampton (2007-2010) - First Class

I am currently a student at the Institute for Complex Systems Simulation at the University of Southampton. I'm focussing on complexity within Remote Sensing and Earth Observation (which covers processing of observations of the Earth from satellite and airborne platforms).

My PhD is entitled: Enhanced scientific value from remotely-sensed data through improved pre-processing methods and models: towards an integrated UK Environmental Change Observatory. The research will investigate a number of issues with the current methods of pre-processing remotely-sensed data particularly focussing on atmospheric correction and BRDF correction methods. Novel methods for collecting ground data to support these pre-processing stages (such as using webcams) will also be investigated.

I do a lot of programming as part of my work, and have released a number of pieces of software, including extensions for ENVI and ArcGIS, as well as libraries for IDL.

I also maintain a list of Free GIS Data on my website, which currently lists over 300 sources of freely available data - everything from global land cover to terrorist incidents, and irrigated lands maps to building footprints. The site receives around 300 visits per day, and has received attention from a number of organisations including English Heritage, the US National Centre for Geoinformation and others.

Far more details about me are available on my academic website (http://www.rtwilson.com/academic), where you can also find source-code for software I have written.
