Energy & Climate Change Lecture Series

Introductions by Professor Adam Wheeler and Professor AbuBakr Bahaj.

Developed countries increasingly are having to face up to the fact that their infrastructures are no longer fit for purpose and are a major contributor to climate change. Transitioning from this situation to one where the infrastructure is sustainable against economic, environmental, social and technological criteria is both a major challenge and opportunity. This lecture will address what the principle considerations are in infrastructure development, what factors in design, engineering and policy need to be addressed urgently, where innovation can supply new approaches to solutions and where future research is essential.

A Q & A session will follow the lecture.

Professor Brian Collins CBE, FREng, is the Department for Transport’s Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). He has board experience in a wide range of sectors including professional institutions and has worked on an international stage. He is frequently invited to give keynote speeches at international conferences in the UK and elsewhere. He is consulted widely by academia, industry and commerce, and government on a wide range of strategic issues, particularly where visions of possible futures are critical. He is also a member of GCSA’s Chief Scientific Advisers Council and is currently chairing an Engineering and Interdependency Expert Group for Infrastructure UK, led by Lord James Sassoon, Commercial Secretary in Her Majesty’s Treasury. He is by presidential invitation a Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
