VISUALIZATION OF SOUND FIELD WITH APPLICATION

Professor Weikang Jiang
Deputy Director of the Institute of Vibration, Shock & Noise
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China

Abstract

The techniques of microphone array, such as beaming, FFT based NAH and BEM based NAH, are developed rapidly and getting more and more engineering application. However, some problems, such as the NAH reconstruction for unsteady acoustic filed, are not solved yet. The cyclostationary sound signals, as a special kind of non-stationary sound signal, were studied much detailed in signal processing field. Combined with the cyclostationary signal processing methodology, the cyclostationary near field acoustic holography (CYNAH) technique is developed to reconstruct acoustic physical quantities in the cyclostationary sound field. We developed the FFT based CYNAH, BEM based CYNAH, and combine CYNAH with identical source NAH or wave superposition NAH to improve the reconstruction efficiency. The reconstructed CSD by CYNAH shows the distribution of the modulating wave of cyclostationary sources and supplies more cyclostationary acoustical information than the conventional NAH. CYNAH are employed for the noise source imagines of refrigerator as well as compressor, which emission noises are typical cyclostationary. The CYNAH are also used for fault diagnose of some machineries such as gear boxes.

Biography

Weikang Jiang is a professor and deputy director in Institute of Vibration, Shock & Noise in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He received the Bachelor and Ph.D from SJTU in 1982 and 1990 respectively, and M.Sc from Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering in 1987. From 1982 to 1984 he worked in Hudong Shipyard as a marine engineer. From 1990 to 1995 he worked in the Institute of Marine Machinery, SJTU, as a lecturer, associate professor, deputy director and director respectively. From 1995 to 1997 he researched noise of vehicle in Isuzu Motor Japan. He returned to SJTU at the end of 1997, and as a professor he turned his attention to the techniques for analysing and reduction acoustic noise with their application. In 2003 he investigated the noise of maglev transrapid both in Germany and Shanghai as an expert invited by Chinese as well as Germany government.

His current research interested is visualization of sound field, Fast-BEM for acoustics, machinery noise reduction, transportation noise and default identification based on acoustic imagine. He has near 100 journal publication and 14 patents about the techniques in identifying and reducing noise sources. In 2007 he was awarded Shanghai Government Prize for Science and Technology Advancement because of his contribution in reducing the noise of urban railway transportation.
