David Martin is a Professor in the School of Geography and has worked on socioeconomic applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for over 20 years. He is Director of the Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC) Census Programme, a co-director of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods and a member of ESRC Council. David works closely with the Office for National Statistics, particularly on geographical referencing methodology, and his work led directly to creation of the system of Output Areas used in the 2001 Census, and subsequently Super Output Areas which form the basis of the statistical geography system in England and Wales.
