Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has many applications in geomorphology and Quaternary Geology. It is a variety of remote sensing using electromagnetic radiation to image the shallow subsurface. The equipment is portable and relatively easy to operate, although data processing and interpretation can be more time consuming and requires greater expertise. This lecture uses a number of themes to illustrate the use of GPR starting with ground truth to confirm that GPR reflections do match subsurface stratigraphy; testing depth of penetration and the range/resolution trade-off; stratigraphic studies identifying relative chronology from superposition and cross-cutting relationships and selecting sample locations. Case studies include visualisation of river deposits, sand dunes, coastal sediments and peat in cross-section and 3-D with examples from around the world including Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, Namibia, North America and Yorkshire .
At 15:30 in LT/B immediately before Professor Bristow's talk, Dr Arjan Reesink, Research Fellow in Physical Geography University of Southampton, will be displaying some of the Earth Surface Dynamics Research Group's latest equipment.
