I discuss an approach to the modelling of various biological systems which starts from individual-based models, and then goes on to derive from these the corresponding deterministic equations (which are valid when the size of the system is large) and the leading order stochastic correction to them. In many cases large and well-de?ned stochastic cycles arise, even though the corresponding deterministic equations predict the system will approach a ?xed point. Application of these ideas to predator-prey dynamics, epidemiology, cellular systems and autocatalytic reactions, amongst others, will be discussed.
