I discuss the formulation of individual-based models as master equa- tions, which allows use to be made of well-established methods from the theory of these equations to analyse their behaviours. In particular, use of van Kam- pen’s system-size expansion allows for the investigation of ampli?ed oscillations due to demographic stochasticity. The relation of these so-called quasi-cycles to limit cycles is described as are the existence of quasi-cycles about limit cycles.
