: In the last 5 years there have been significant advances in the technology of autonomous underwater vehicles and their use for gathering data in the ocean is expanding rapidly. The low cost of underwater gliders allows multiple vehicles to be deployed together and they are equipped with two-way satellite communications thus enabling oceanographers to employ adaptive sampling strategies. There is growing interest in developing techniques to maximise the value of data gathered by gliders. In this talk some examples of the applications of underwater gliders will be described and problems in developing optimal sampling strategies will be discussed.
