You are cordially invited to hear about, and discuss, an exciting new Southampton intiative to help researchers manage their data. This is applicable to all SES academics, and particularly people who run research teams.

Please RSVP to Dr Kenji Takeda (SES), ktakeda@soton.ac.uk, by Monday 22nd March 2010

The Climategate scandal has recently highlighted the importance of research data management. The University of Southampton is starting a major project, funded by JISC, to improve its support for researchers in this critical area. The aim of the Institutional Data Management Blueprint (IDMB) project is to produce a framework for managing research data that encompasses the whole institution, based on an analysis of current requirements. Academic Schools, iSolutions, the Library, and other stakeholders are all working together to make this a reality.

The project is now distributing a research data questionnaire in Archaeology, Chemistry, Electronics & Computer Science, Engineering Sciences, with the intention to roll this out university-wide, to build a picture of what people currently do with their data. Follow-up interviews and workshops will then allow us to drill down on users' issues, and allow us to start working towards better solutions for the future.

The goal is to create a 10-year data management roadmap for the University that improves the ability of staff and students to focus on their research, and highlight where investment is required in the near- and long-term future.

In the workshop you will be invited to express your views on research data management, and suggest ways in which this can be improved at School and University- level.
