Watson on Jeopardy!
In February 2011‚ in a historic event‚ the IBM computer system ‘Watson’ triumphed over the best Jeopardy! players of all time.
In this Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences Distinguished Lecture‚ Dr Chris Welty of IBM Research‚ New York‚ will discuss how Watson works at a high level with examples from the Jeopardy! show. Watson is a computer system capable of answering rich natural language questions and estimating its confidence in those answers at a level rivalling the best humans at the tasks. In the special Jeopardy! match Watson consistently outperformed its human opponents on the game’s signalling device but had problems with some clues. Watson had access to 200 million pages of structured and unstructured content on four terabytes of disk storage, including the full text of Wikipedia – but was not connected to the Internet during the game.
Dr Welty goes behind the scenes of Watson and Jeopardy! in this lecture, which is open to all, and begins at 5pm in the Turner Sims Concert Hall on Thursday 1 December, with refreshments available from 4.30 pm. All welcome, no tickets required.
