Unmanned Vehicles: From Automatic Control to Autonomous Control

This talk will overview flight control and autonomous vehicles related research activities currently taking place at Loughborough. Starting with automatic control for aerospace and space vehicles, it will cover research in various parts of flight control systems including MEMS sensor based data fusion for attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS), electrical actuation systems for supporting the advancement of more electric aircraft, magnetic torquers for low-Earth-orbiting satellites, and new nonlinear/robust/optimisation based control techniques. Then the talk will focus on research in high level autonomous control required for safe operation of unmanned vehicles, including situation awareness, collision avoidance, decision making and health monitoring of unmanned aircraft systems. Video clips of indoor and outdoor flight tests of both small scale fixed wing aircraft and rotorcraft will be included in the talk.
