The optical properties of nanoparticles underpin applications as diverse as meta-materials, ultra-resolution sensing and solar cells. In this talk I show that for a large class of nanoparticles these properties can be understood and predicted using a set of modes that are a generalization of the Mie's modes for spheres. I then examine how the knowledge of the particle's modes allows us to control light through interference.
