Abstract

Sound from the interaction between vehicle tyres and the road surface is a significant problem. Outside the vehicle, it is one of the main components of road traffic noise, while inside it detracts from passenger comfort, and hence perceived refinement. It arises due to non-uniformity in the tyre and road surfaces; the resulting vibrations radiate sound, and are also transmitted to the passenger cabin via the vehicle suspension. This seminar will describe the physical processes involved, and discuss how they can be modelled.
