Summary
ABP Marine Environmental Research (ABPmer) is a leading UK marine consultancy based in Southampton, offering a range commercial services to clients who wish to develop business and infrastructure in coastal and offshore locations. Numerical simulations of tides, waves and sediment transport processes are often used to inform or enhance our work. Used appropriately, numerical modelling tools can be used to supplement otherwise sparse observed in-situ data, and to investigate the potential effects of the proposed development on the surrounding (physical) environment. This presentation will provide an overview of the types of numerical modelling tools and data we might use for a number of different applications. The presentation will also consider some of the practical and technical challenges presented by this type of numerical modelling in a commercial context.
Biography
Dr David Lambkin has a research background in coastal oceanography and sediment dynamics. He joined ABPmer 6 years ago and is a senior member of the Modelling Team. In recent years, David has mainly contributed to numerous Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Metocean Statistics studies on behalf of offshore wind farm and tidal power developers. David has also lead the development of a long term wave hindcast dataset and wave forecasting system (SEASTATES.net) that provides valuable information for many projects undertaken by the company. A keen sailor since he was young, David combines work and pleasure by providing tidal current predictions to the British Sailing Team, including the London and Rio Olympic venues.
