The workshop targets young academics (e.g. lecturer/assistant professors and post-docs) from the UK and will provide an environment for scientific discussions, networking and mentoring around porous media research. The workshop consists of keynote talks, short talks by the attendees and several panel discussions.

The keynote speakers will address both their research and share their experience from successful career paths on

  • coping with challenging funding landscape,

  • identifying hot research topics,

  • establishing collaborations across disciplines

  • establishing collaborations across sectors (e.g. joint industry projects)

  • key elements of a successful grant proposal

  • opportunities and caveats when communicating research to the public?

Confirmed keynote speakers are

  • Steffen Berg (Shell)

  • Martin Blunt (Imperial College London)

  • Rainer Helmig (University of Stuttgart)

  • Ian Main (University of Edinburgh)

The workshop is designed to provide a dynamic interactive environment rather than a series of isolated talks. Hence, the contributed talks on similar topics will be followed by panel discussions that address those topics with the objective to identify prolific scientific research questions to be approached in a collaborative manner. The contributed talks should therefore rather outline research interests than completed research.

Tentative session themes are:

  • Uncertainty Quantification (UQ)

  • Pore-scale modeling, experiments, visualisation

  • Multi-scale modeling, model concepts on several scales

  • Poro-elasticity

  • Applications: CCS, EOR, Shales, Bio (Capillary networks, tissue)

  • Stochastic PDEs, homogenization, mixed FEM

The workshop is fully funded by PMPM and attendance is free of charge.

A limited number of bursaries are available to support travel expenses.

Registration is now open at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/roads-to-success-in-porous-media-research-registration-13001107663 and we encourage you to submit the attached registration form as early as possible since the number of participants is limited but not later than 30.09.2014.
