Since the work of Poincare, through major insights from Rene Thom, Stephen Smale and the Russian School, the emphasis in nonlinear dynamical systems has shifted from "How does this system behave?" to "How do we expect typical systems of this type to behave?". Recent ideas incorporate notions of symmetry into this approach. It can be especially valuable in e.g. biology, where precise details of the system (or even the variables) may be unknown.
No technical knowledge of differential equations or group theory is required for this talk.
