Providing predictions of how the global biosphere will respond to changing climate poses a severe challenge for modellers, given the complexity of the system. Ever more complex models are being developed, but increasing complexity in models comes with problems, as well as benefits. I will discuss the pros and cons of incorporating complexity into climate models, with particular emphasis on marine ecosystems.
