You are cordially invited to a bioengineering seminar given by Prof. Thomas Franz from the University of Cape Town that will take place on Wednesday 27 June at 14:00 (7/3031): Acellular Injection Therapies for Myocardial Infarction: The Effects of Injectate Distribution at Various Stages of Adverse Ventricular Remodelling – An Update Given by our visiting guest Prof. Thomas Franz (thomas.franz@uct.ac.za) (1) Cardiovascular Biomechanics Lab, Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Cape Town, Observatory, South Africa (2) Centre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch, South Africa (3) Centre for High Performance Computing, CSIR, Rosebank, South Africa (4) Programme for the Enhancement of Research Capacity, Research Office, University of Cape Town, Mowbray, South Africa
ABSTRACT An emerging therapy to limit adverse remodelling of the heart after myocardial infarction (heart attack) is the injection of biomaterials into the infarcted wall of the left ventricle (LV). Introduced for cell injection therapies, it has not been well understood whether positive outcomes observed stem from cellular signalling and tissue regeneration, structural effects of the added material or a combination of both. Based on recent work in our group, we have now investigated in more detail in a computational study the influence the distribution of an acellular myocardial injectate has on ventricular function and wall mechanics with several configuration of adverse ventricular remodelling post-infarction.
