Energy and Climate Change Lecture Series

UK Government Policy on Energy and Climate Change

With the Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change

The Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG) within the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton undertakes extensive research in renewable energy, energy in buildings (including consumption assessments) and the impact of climate change on the built environment.

For renewable energy systems (solar photovoltaics, ocean energy conversion technologies, microgeneration, etc), the work includes fundamental understanding of device performance coupled with realistic estimates of energy yields, accurate characterization of the resources, environmental impacts and the collection of reliable data in the operating environments.

The urban energy portfolio also encompasses studies conducted at the city, village and the building scales of demand reduction, energy generation (microgeneration) and utilising ICT for monitoring building performance and feedback to users with impacts on behaviour.

Current major programmes include energy in communities, “Energy for Development” which promote renewable energy utilisation in various sectors, but with special emphasis on development in rural regions of the world and countrywide capacity building in energy, eco-cities research that aim to study eco-city development encompassing resource assessment, technology pathways for the production and conservation of energy, planning, social and economic studies and the assessment of carbon intensities in cities.
