Computing systems are now pervasive. Whether in the home, in the car, at an event or even just walking down the street - computers are invisibly performing a range of calculations that enable us to go about our business. This is causing profound changes that will transform the world we live in. Information and communication technology is infusing with the physical world and provides the promise of creating a Smarter Planet.

‘Smarter Planet’ is IBM’s campaign to support and engage with technology innovation, which will increasingly shape the world around us.

This presentation will:

  • describe the underlying technology trends that are leading to the emergence of a Smarter Planet
  • discuss the societal and some of the environmental factors that motivate the creation of a Smarter Planet
  • explore the Smarter City as a building block in the creation of a Smarter Planet.

"By smarter, we mean that intelligence is being infused into the systems and processes that make the world work – into things no one would recognise as computers: cars, appliances, roadways, power grids, clothes, even natural systems such as agriculture and waterways."
