From Solve to Innovate – use the Power of the Portfolio

Clint Davies-Taylor – SIMULIA, Dassault Systèmes

In a traditional product development process virtual physics simulation was mainly used for virtual testing and validation of manually created design concepts. The designs obtained by the experience of skilled engineers were virtually tested before moving forward to real prototypes and expensive workbench testing.

With the increasing power of simulation, its full potential may be utilized to drive the design and development: Not only test your design, let simulation help you to engineer the best-possible design suitable for your application.

This presentation describes how to harness the Power of the Portfolio of products already installed at the University of Southampton.

BIOGRAPHY Clint has a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham Trent University. He first started using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in 1984 to analyse dynamic shock loads in Submarine weapons handling systems at Strachan and Henshaw Ltd. Then he moved to Foster Wheeler Power Products using ANSYS to examine stresses and performing fracture mechanics calculations in the welds of heat exchangers and steam generators for submarine nuclear reactors. After a brief period working for Boeing Computer Services he set up, with a partner, a Stress Analysis Consultancy working mainly in the Automotive and Aerospace sectors until 2003 when he joined Abaqus Inc. After 9 years in the Services team he became the Academic Liaison and Sales Manager for SIMULIA.

The 3DEXPERIENCE: Engineering in the age of experience

David Faulkner – Dassault Systèmes

Recent years have seen dramatic changes in the expectations of consumers when purchasing and using a product or service. In response, engineers and designers have had to adapt the way they work and the tools they use.

This talk will cover a brief history of the software tools that engineers have used over the years, from CAD to PLM, and go into detail on the latest development from Dassault Systemes, the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform. This will include examples of how engineers from several companies are using the software in their live projects.

BIOGRAPHY David has a degree in Physics from the University of Southampton and has worked in the field of engineering software throughout his career. He is currently the Academic Representative for Dassault Systemes throughout northern Europe.
