BRECcIA - Building REsearch Capacity for sustainable water and food security In sub-saharan Africa

Climate variability impacts on water and food security across African drylands, impacting vulnerable members of society whose livelihoods are highly dependent on subsistence farming and pastoralism, and who are subjected to hydrological hazards. The problem is that there is a lack of locally relevant research and solutions to address these challenges, and there is a lack of a systematic approach to doing this – instead we need to build the partnerships and capacity for future local researchers to solve these challenges.

The overall vision of the BRECcIA project is to “strengthen individual research capabilities and institutional capacity in three countries: Kenya, Ghana and Malawi” and do this in order to carry out impactful and high-quality research that leads to positive changes in policy and practice for sustainable water and food security. This will be delivered through high level research programmes that integrate across disciplines and are underpinned by local and regional priorities, but also the constraints and opportunities across these scales.
